Malfroy is Sunsmart

Last Tuesday we did a presentation to our school assembly.

We wanted to promote being sunsmart and showed a powerpoint of types of melanoma and what sunburn can do to our skin.

We think showing the pictures was a good idea because they were real and kids dont want to get melanoma after seeing these pictures.

We also told them to slip, slop, slap and wrap.

Kai at the Right Price

A new project is being run in Western Heights and Mangakino communities over the next few months. Kai at the right price is a project to ensure families have access to quality fresh produce at an affordable price.

Here's how it works - the shop that is involved offers two different size packs every week, which will contain a selection of fresh, seasonal produce. These will always be priced at either $10 or $15. On a given day the buyer picks up their re-usable bag with their produce.

For Western Heights contact Produce Plus on 07 349 1207

For Mangakino contact Mangakino Four Square on 07 882 8122

Nerves

LAST ASSEMBLY I SANG A SONG. I MADE IT UP ON THE GUITAR AND I MADE WORDS FOR IT.

Sun Safety

This year at HPS we have been talking about sun safety and blogs. This year I have learnt more about sun safety and we have met new people throughout the year and that has been cool. Next I hope that Whaea Donna could explain more so that I can learn more about HPS .

By: Shaiyan

HPS

Last year for health promoting we have been doing a lot of interesting things. We had lots of fundraisers like discos, pj day, wacky hair day, pirate day and much more. Today we had to brain storm some things that we wanted to do about our school and we want to make a lot of changes..... and today we had a hps hui where other schools came and we did work. We also learnt about sun smart safety.

Our new canteen

When I heard that we were getting a new canteen I was like ''Mmmm'' so that day when it started I went to go and order my lunch and was happy and full of joy. At lunch time I went to go and get my lunch but I couldn't because the whole kitchen was full of kids that were hungry. On the way when I was walking to my friends I was like "YUMMY" for my lunch I had hot chips and delicious tender hotdogs.

...THE END...

By Pipiana Te Amo
Today we are having a HPS hui.

We leart about cancer and the name of types of cancer.
We did a brain storm about how we could be more sun smart or road safe.
We also wrote some ideas for the sun safe competion. For example we want it to be funny and humorous. The main thing is we want a shade over the little park.

NAOMI

Drinking Fountains.

Three weeks ago our class has been doing a project on R.P.S Drinking Fountains because the state of them are not nice.

So our group, Brandon, Jamie, Kawa and Saiasi have done a project about our gross drinking fountains at our school.

We did a survey on behalf of the school and none of the people would drink out of the fountains. People said to get a water cooler in our survey and that is what happend. Thank you

Sasori out!!!!!! : ]

sun safety

We need to wear sun hats and sunblock and to not get skin cancer.
At our school, Mountview Primary, we're trying to be sun smart in our school. In our school we are trying to build tents and lots of shade. We need to help people to not get sunburnt so there isn't a chance they will get skin cancer.

gardens

At Malfroy we have been growing plants since last year. We have grown strawberries, beetroot, asparagus and beans. We have lots of gardens around the school. Room10 always

waters the garden after morning tea and after lunch. Mr Francis is proud of the effort that

we have put into the gardens.

Gardining down at Ohinemutu

Down at Ohinemutu we do gardening because it's part of our learning and our topic.

Every Thursday and Friday we go down to Ohinemutu to learn about compost, fertilizer and planting plants. After we do all these jobs, we get to have free lunch but before that we have to do lots of jobs and also taking some pictures.

I predict in the future we will be great at planting.

The End.

sunsmart

Last week we had cross country with the primary schools. We did not have sunscreen with us. We didn't have shade. Mrs Kemp will provide us some sunsceren and shade next time.

Information on Sun Smart

Diffrent types of cancer

Melanoma

Squameas

Basal cell

The UVB and UVA rays come from the sun and they are present even if you can't see them.

If you get burnt when you're young when you get older you could get cancer which no-one likes.

It is best to wear bucket hats and brimmed hats becasue they can cover you from the sun.

Hat Parade!

WHAKAMARU SCHOOL!

Today at the hui we were talking about sunsafety. Whakamaru schools idea was to have a hat parade. People will make thier own hats and show them off. Jodie decided that we will have a first, second and third.

Senior School at RPS !!! :D

Senior School 10/11, are helping the community by planting native plants . We also did a wet land , we put the wet land on the lake to clean the water . The plants that are on the wet land in the lake are sucking up all the dirty water making clean . At Ohinemutu we are learning gardening skills so that we can do the same at school . All the informatoin we get from our tutors we take back to school and share with everyone else, so that the whole school can be part of it . Senior School has made a garden by the classes we have put up are wooden fence so it can hold in the dirt . The boys in room 10 came out of the class to fill the garden up, we will be planting vegetables.

One Thursday morning when senior school was doing the wet land project, the newspaper man came and took photos of us and our wet land . We really enjoy planting .

SunSmart Information

Melanoma is a cancer that is very deadly and you get it from being in the sun to long.
You can still get cancer when it is not sunny because the uvb rays will still be there.

Jasmine & Michael

Gardening.

For the last five months, Rotorua Primary School has been going down to Ohinemutu to plant some native plants on land and also on water.

This is working with the community to tidy up the environment so we can learn to keep our school clean and tidy.

Also we are learning about planting plants, so we can plant plants at Rotorua Primary School.

we sang ''lazy song''

Last week a director named Mike Johnson came to our school to do a music film. We were lip singing. We had singers, dancers, and actors. It was really fun. We had to find props for our film. We started practising and it took a long time. Our dance was cool. The director edited the film and the film was really cool to watch. The director was funny and so was his assistant. They also taught us the LOVE YOU sign.

junior tabloids

On the 16th of September the juniors went to their tabloids. Tabloids are when juniors or seniors go and it's at Maratiti. The juniors said they had a lot of fun .
The juniors said "we had lots of activities and this boy Regan won both of them for the boys."
bye bye.

Bronze Accreditation

Healthy, sunsmart and active.

We have been putting together our bronze accreditation powerpoint, we have been having to get photos of healthy things.

Bjarni, Joshua

Health Promotion

We have learnt how to keep our bodies safe from Melanoma. We have decided to always wear a hat so that you won't get skin cancer. Today we have learnt a lot of things from other kids ideas. We have learnt that boys can get skin cancer at the back of their necks and also on the tops of their ears. The skin cancer society lady was speaking about how Bob Marly died. Bob Marley died from skin cancer because he did not look after himself by not wearing a hat or putting sun screen on.

By:Teri & Cullen

HPS Cluster

Today we had an HPS cluster hui. Some of the schools from Taupo and Rotorua came we met a lady, Mel, who talked to us about skin cancer and how to avoid it. Then Mel told us that Bob Marley died of skin cancer and everyone thought he died of smoking.

Summer & Kayla-Rose

Heath Promoting

Today we are having a Hps Hui (Health Promoting). We are learning about skin cancer and melanoma. Hopefully the message spreads because people who are getting very sick and everyone will know what they are going through. At Selwyn School we fundraised for shade trees to keep us safe from getting sunburnt and getting cancer. We got free sunhats from Mel and there is a limit so other schools can stop getting sunburnt too. So back to the fundraising, we did Pj Day, Pirate Day, Wacky Hair Day, a Disco and a lot more fundraisers.

So Be Sun Safe Everyone!!!

By Legacy Shay Ruhe Haimona. 28/09/2011

Heath Promoting Schools!

Today we learnt to be sun smart and then we learnt how you get Skin Cancer. For exsample: Bob Marley was a famous singer and he died from skin cancer on his foot! So then we did a brain storm about what we can improve at our school about sunsmart. The ideas we got was, to try and convince our school children to wear hats and put on sun block throughout the sunny days. And then we talked about what we were going to do about the shade in our school! We thought about having a veranda on the fields and courts! So after that we talked about where we were going to put our powerpoint, we thought to have it at our school assembly and our broadcast! After that we showed everyone what ideas we came up with! It was really fun and enjoyable (: SO KEEP SUN SMART!

By Shaquana & Tiana

Heading for Sun Smart

When we get back at school we are going to start our power point about sun smart.
We are going to start by making an animation it will say "be safe and wear sun screen when it is sunny ".

We are going to fundraise for shade in our school , meaning getting cover shades so we can play in the shade.

Our school has people who are keen to spend their lunch time solving problems. There names are The Super Crew. They are going to now carry sun screen around and give it to kids who need it. Our duty teachers are going to walk around with sun screen also.

We are going to try to convince kids to wear hats and sunscreen so they dont get sun burnt.

Do we need a Canteen at RPS ?? !!

Two students (Shanelle and Niya) from Rotorua Primary School have been looking at having a Canteen at Rotorua Primary School. The teachers think that this canteen won't work because we dont have enough students, but then our teacher ( Hemi ) said we should have a lunch pack that ( Moniques aunty ) will bring to us for only $6 . This is a good idea if we can't have a canteen.

The End

Health

Today a lady called Mell came in and talked about Sun Safety. She talked about skin cancer (MELLINOMEA)hopefully I spelt that right but this is how you say it (MELL- I- NO-ME-A)
She also said you can get sun burned when the sun isn't even out.She said BOB MARLEY didn't die of smoking weed he had skin cancer on his foot.So keep sun smart or safe.

Rippa Rugby.

Hi. I'm Tayla. Last term I did a rippa rugby tornament on Wednesday. There were lots of other schools and teams that went too. We also had a year 3 and 4 team that went as well.
My day was awesome! We had lots of support there and we placed. I'm not sure what it was but we made it into the Bay of Plenty reps which was really, really awesome! The next week we went to our other tournament in Paengaroa to play against the best teams around New Zealand. When we were there, out of about 8 or 9 teams Selwyn came runners up for the silver plate. We also had support there. We had a very cool day and we went to school so proud. And that is my story about...

It has been hard because we have been facing all the A teams which let us down a bit because we have lost. We have been put down a lot and we have been thinking it isn't fair. My thing is sports because I can express myself and that is so cool. When I play sports I love particapating and contributing which is when I can express myself. I have a lot of friends that love sports too. One day I hope that I can have a future in sports. My teacher Matua Glenn started a club called the Sports Academy which has an amount of 24 students.
